Chiropractic Care for the Treatment of Lower Back Pain

Chiropractic Care for the Treatment of Lower Back Pain

One of the significant causes of hospital visits in America is back pain. Lower back pain is a common problem that cuts across gender and age. Back pain causes can include but not limited to, sports injuries, accidents, and muscle strains.

Many people have sought alternative methods for treating their back pain. Almost 6% of the total American population visit chiropractors annually for one reason or another. Nearly half of these go to seek lower back pain treatment.

Contrary to popular belief, chiropractors are well acquainted with the human body and seek to restore function to otherwise misaligned joints, bones, and muscles.

A Chiropractor’s Goals and Beliefs

We, as chiropractors, aim to restore functionality, which, if successful, reduces the pain. In the process, educate and guide our patients on how to be responsible for their health through ergonomics, exercises, and other therapies.

In chiropractic care, we understand that the body is a network of connections between the spine, the nervous system, and the rest of the body. The principle behind chiropractic care is that joints, muscles, and bones have been designed to work in a certain way. When there is misalignment, then pain ensues.

The fundamental beliefs of chiropractic care:

  • Structural and biomechanical disruption of the normal working of the spine affects the nervous system.
  • Chiropractic care can treat many conditions by restoring excellent flowing communication and function to the spine.

In a nutshell, a chiropractic adjustment will seek to restore normal spine mobility and altered reflexes.

What Can Chiropractic Care Treat?

Chiropractic care can treat a myriad of neuromusculoskeletal conditions but not limited to:

  • Neck Pain
  • Headaches
  • Arthritic pain
  • Car accident injuries
  • Repetitive strains
  • Sports injuries
  • Lower back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Sciatica (pain along the sciatic nerve that stems from your lower back to the legs).

It is important to note that chiropractic care can also be used to:

  • Strengthen your immune system
  • Improve blood circulation
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Increase your energy
  • Aid in pain relief during pregnancy

What Does Chiropractic Care Look Like?

When you visit the chiropractor near you, you will go through the same experience as other healthcare givers. The care, though, is specialized, and the treatment table is unique. The different techniques employed require the treatment table to be accommodative to allow the spinal adjustments.

Chiropractic care involves the use of hands in the adjustment of the trouble area. The spine, however, is the focal point of the treatment. There are two types of manipulation techniques:

  • Spinal manipulation – Characterized by the HVLA (high-velocity low amplitude) thrust that results in the audible “pop” sound.
  • Spinal mobilization – This is a gentle technique employed in cases where the patient or the circumstance requires a softer touch.

Other Forms Employed in Chiropractic Therapy

Manipulation is not the only form that is used in chiropractic care. Adjunctive therapy is usually used as part of the general treatment plan.

Some of these therapies are:

  • Exercise – There are specific exercises that are incorporated to aid in the strengthening of the back.
  • Heat and Ice – Heat and ice can be used in the treatment of pain. Ice packs are placed on the back to numb it for 15 minutes. Then the ice packs are removed, and a heating pad is placed on the back — the heating pad aids in restoring blood flow to speed up the healing process.
  • Massage – In cases such as rheumatoid arthritis where “popping” will be counterproductive, massages are used. Soft tissues are massaged to improve blood flow, reduce inflammation, and swelling.
  • Ultrasound – This method uses deep heat that is created by sound waves and is applied to the joints and soft tissues. It can also treat back pain, spasms, and stiffness.
  • Hydrotherapy – Hot baths, saunas, and whirlpools are used to deliver water in varying pressure and temperatures to reduce back sensitivity.
  • Dietary management – Food is a vital part of any recovery process, and here we focus on types of food that help reduce pain.

Is Chiropractic Therapy Risky?

Chiropractic therapy employs safe techniques that will not put you in any danger. The “popping” that is associated with spinal manipulation is carefully done. Our chiropractors are well trained and know how to perform these therapies.

Research has shown that chiropractic care is highly effective for treating lower back pain, neck pains, and even headaches. All the above techniques and others that aren’t mentioned are manipulated natural elements that are used in controlled environments. This makes them very beneficial to the healing process.
